I found the Bickerstaff/Bickerstaffe Web Page very informative! Thanks for your work. It confirms my family's stories of the where, who, and meaning of the surname.
For being retired, I thought I would have had plenty of time to do some other things, however, as people find out you're retired they want "free consultant services" so I'm now a Mfg'ing Consultant as well a doing my own "thing". By the way, I was in Glennwood Spings, Colorado USA and stayed at a Bed & Breakfast at Mitchell Creek. The host reconized my name and remarked a Bruce Bickerstaff had made some inquires about Mitchell Creek B & B. I told them I thought you were in the Travel Business and it may have been you. If so "small world". I will gather family records and pass on to you if the family agrees. Some of them do not wish to include the Horse Thief or the Boot-Legger, etc.
Here is a picture of my two brothers and I (me in the middle) at my sixtieth birthday.

Very interesting Web page. My name is Jeffrey Wayne Bickerstaff (Jeff). I am the nephew of Lester Bickerstaff who wrote last December. I am the son of Wayne and Pat Bickerstaff (the guy on the right in the picture in "Lester's Bio"). I have only one brother and he is my identical twin named Bryan Bickerstaff (I am the older one however by four minutes). I am from Garland, Texas (suburb of Dallas) and just was married to Leslie Patterson on October 24, 1998.
I am an avid web surfer and very interested in my family name. I used to think there weren't many of us out there, but I guess that is just not the case. My brother and first cousins all take a great deal of pride in our name because of the heritage my grandmother (Mary Rose Bickerstaff) left us. We feel like that there is no one out there quite like a Bickerstaff!! She passed away on December 22, 1992. She was married to Marvin Bickerstaff who still has a brother living in Southlake, Texas (Clyde Bickerstaff).
I have been a City Planner for the City of Garland, Texas for the past five years. My wife Leslie is an Escrow Analyst for GMAC. I attended Garland High School (Class of 1987) and Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas (Class of 1991 and 1994). My wife attended Garland Lakeview Centennial High School (Class of 1989) and Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas (Class of 1993). She still can't grasp the "Bickerstaff" mentality, but she still has plenty of time! Interesting family fact: No males have been born into the Bickerstaff side of the family for 3 generations!! The name should live long!!! Keep up the good work. I look forward seeing more in the future.

Just a quick hello after reading your fasinating Web site. I'm Mark Bickerstaffe age 38 years and formerly of Manchester, England now living with family in California. I work in the computer industry and became interested in my family history upon the birth of my son.
I wanted to let you have a brief summary of my particular Bickerstaffe line, I'm sorry having read carefully your area of interest I am not able to link any sources together. Almost all of the family members below have lived in the Manchester area of England.

He has been very interested in researching the Bickerstaff name, which until now has been done by books that list almost every Bickerstaff in the world and have a family tree layed out that looks like an over-grown willow tree. Your information has pruned that tree, if not chopped it down, and has given my father confidence in the fact that the name Bickerstaff was not born from the loins of a drunkin' English peasant from the country who took a weekend trip to London to sow his oates.Finally, I am glad to say that now I can quell my friend's minds that think that the name Bickerstaff is a weapon of war.

Subject: A ghost story (Oct 97)
Dear Bruce,
It's almost Halloween 1997 and I have finally managed to download the World Wide Bickerstaff Page that has mysteriously eluded me for the past several months. Now it is five pages and lots of new letters to read.
Time for a ghost story.
Many of the letters express pleasure in finding so many Bickerstaffs on the internet and they like to hear from others who share one of their most personal possessions; their name. Well, I had one reach out over six to eight centuries to touch me!
I'm not kidding and I have a witness who would not lie; she's an attorney and we all know attorneys do not lie. She is also my daughter, Chris. Around thirteen years ago (auspicious isn't it) I was in the UK on business and took the weekend to visit her in Exeter where she was pursuing a master's degree. Among the required sight-seeing stops is their beautiful cathedral, Church of St. Peter, started in 1275 and completed c. 1365. It was, however, originally consecrated a Norman cathedral in 1133.
It was Saturday morning and what started out to be a casual overview of the building turned into a mob-oriented mass of young people intent in practicing for a singing activity to be presented the next day. We could go nowhere. We were forced up against one of dozens of crypts in the area of the altar and there we stood.
Chris, always the more observant, poked me in the ribs and admonished me, "Dad, you're leaning on one of my ancestors".
Sure enough, the crypt held the bones of the then presiding bishop, James(?) Bickerstaffe, who had consecrated the cathedral almost a millennia before. I can't recall if it was the original cathedral or the replacement or if I have his proper first name so if anyone can visit Exeter and check it out, I'd appreciate it.
You'll have to admit that this is a switch from e-mail trying to locate lineage to lineage reaching out to grab you.

I heard about the Bickerstaff Home Page from my father, George William Bickerstaff of Cranberry TWP, PA USA.
I really don't have much to say except that I exist as well as my Mother, Jeanne, and 7 other brothers and sisters (I'm the 7th of 8). Most of my siblings have children, but so far only one carries the name Bickerstaff. My niece, Tereza Bickerstaff (7 yo) lives with her mother and father in Brussels Belg. We are a pretty neat family all in all....

I sent a note to Bubba in Alabama telling him after reading the Home-page (which was extraordinary-thank you!)I think I'm his relative and in possession of all genealogy since our ancestor came to America in 1720. G'day Bruce:
Thank you for putting my mind at ease. I typed until 4:30 AM and realized there were still a few lines from children of Robert Bickerstaff born 1770 that I'd never gone back to for their descendancy.
I made a note under that line of children that it would follow. Now that I know you got the pedigree of William who sailed to America in 1720, I'll finish it ASAP.
That will complete all Bickerstaff name descendancy in Sara Bussey Bickerstaff's book. I started out listing the married daughters and their descendancy but it was starting to look like everything but Bickerstaffs so I deleted all the other names and just listed the married Bickerstaff girl, her husband's name and the first names of her children. Anyone who may recognize an ancestor who was originally a Bickerstaff can e-mail anyone with the book for their descendency.

As listed previously William Bickerstaff formerly Bickerstath or Bickersteth (from Lancashire Parish near Ormskirk in England sailed to America in 1720, died in West Virginia (w. Nancy Pope) and his first son Johnston was born at sea 1720 and died in 1800 Franklin County, Georgia. Other children of William: William, Hugh and Samuel of whom I know nothing.
Johnston Bickerstaff (w. Sarah Cynthia Pollard b.1725) children: Robert (who is my ancestor) born 1770 in Pennsylvania and died 1836 in Alabama, and Andrew, Johnston, Margaret, Henry and Letitia Bickerstaff of whom I know nothing.
Robert Bickerstaff (w. Nancy Robertson b. 1770 Ireland) parents of 11-14 children: William Jefferson (my ancestor whose extensive descendency is listed in last e-mail) and others whose descendency is listed now as far as known:

I think that concludes whatever is known about the original American Bickerstaffs as gathered by Mrs. Lindsay Neill Bickerstaff ( son of Wm. Jefferson Bickerstaff Jr.)in her book. Anyone knowing more about the other sons (Hugh, Samuel,& Wm.) of William who sailed to America from England in 1720 or any information on the other children of his son Johnston PLEASE contribute it to the Bickerstaff Page. I was trying to find information to create a family tree for my son's babybook and came across this webapage. It was extremely helpful in compiling the family tree. Since I utilized your page for information, I felt that I owed you in return. If you are interested in keeping your geneology current. I have three new Bickertaffs for you to add. ON part three of your geneology, about halfway downt he list you will notice the name Annie Augusta, follwoing down from that the first indention is Frank Jeter, Jr, following down you will see Frank Jeter 4, and then three lines down Robert Bradford and Tyler Stanford.
Tyler Stanford married in Dec 2000 to Shannan Hartley of Montgomery Alabama and they had twin boys in August 2002, William Tyler and Paul Stanford.
Robert Bradford Bickerstaff had a son in January 2001 by the name of Harrison Reed Bickerstaff. I am HArrison "Reed"'s mom but am not married to Robert Bradford. I don't know how up to date you keep this information, but I hope it helps. Also, Thomas Mosely listed right above that son of Becky Bickerstaff, also has a son Thomas and just recently delivered a newborn. IF you want I can get that information for you aas well.
